Ya know, I 'm really tired of thise GD hotspot terminology.

I am not a digital communications hardware ham. Sorry, I'm just an old curmudgeon.

I don't understand why everyone and everything wants or needs to go digital.

I have an FTM-400xd which is basically useless on Fusion because of the lack of repeaters.

I'm selling it and go back to my roots, 2 meter AM.

 

Does it come in VHF? And can it be directly linked to Hytera repeaters?

 

10 milliwatt for ~$230, or you can build an interface to an existing spare analog simplex radio/repeater, so that more than one ham can use it.

The open source project is called MMDVM. And I suspect the Shark RF unit profited from the MMDVM authors (Jonathan Naylor, G4KLX) work.

So I buy a digital radio, then one of these boxes so I can connect my digital radio to the INTERNET via this "Hot Spot" so I have an operating range of my own home/yard to be able to talk via a land line (internet) to another digital box somewhere that may also be just a glorified cordless telephone. What is the point? I already do digital transmissions on HF and talk to folks the world over without the need of any infrastructure beyond my feedline, antenna, and 25 watt transceiver.
