You misunderstood, Joe. I probably wasn't clear enough in the way I said it. The whacker, cop wanna be, envisions being a ham as a first step to get into the LEO fraternity. ARRL pastes it all over the place. It was, for W4PG's sake, on the new ARRL homepage the other day. And besides, its QED. ARRL makes bucks from Emcomm I, II and III course sales and probably soon from magazine ads. See below.

Really? It might be old, but it's quite pertinent. I think I recall something about that "FCC whacker" going to court to force the FCC to follow its promulgated rules. The same thing can be asked of the court, in a what I think is called a writ of mandamus. That is, ask the court to order the FCC to enforce the Communications Act of 1934 properly, not selectively. Which, of course it hasn't with respect to the Indy PD bunch. Or more recently, ReconRobotics and its unauthorized LE customers already using the unlicensed devices.

I'm not an attorney (and ARRL Booster) as W4PG is, but I'm fairly well read.

ARRL is creating a "nest" for whacker nurturing by overtly pushing emcomm. It sees emcomm as an opportunity for more money (subscriptions, grants from DHS, etc.). Pretty straightforward. The next thing we'll start seeing is Wig-wag, Whelen and Show-Me ads in QST.

OK, that makes more sense, but it is not the fault of the ARRL or hams in general. Whackers have their own mentality. They see cops with lights, they want lights. They see cops with guns, they want guns. They see cops with radios, they want radios. The problem is in the whacker mentality, not in the normal mentality of the rest of the world.
The FCC has broad latitude to do what they need to do to solve a situation. AFAIK, this situation in Indy was resolved. Punishment of unknown officers is not always the best thing.

LOL!! You're cracking me up here!! :D

Well, maybe QST will soon have a centerfold. I know of a few convicted sex-offenders who also happened to be ham radio operators. I'm not sure how they are connected, but if promoting EMCOMM causes folks to break the law, then by golly, getting a ham radio license must cause rape.

    "rifle scope formulas"
Math study sheet for Extra upgrade?
    Smith chart perhaps?

    Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
Doesn't take anything away from the Little Joe Whacker theme however.

    Don't forget Bob;
Rock music causes teenagers to become Satanic, and video games makes everyone into mass killers.

I honestly don't see what the league's actions have to do with this guy's actions. His parents have more to do with his current situation then the League does.

Oh and Ham Radio causing rape..:D
About as likely as being hit on the head by a peace of space junk.

I heard a little about that but don't have any details - does anybody have the full story about what happened? How did they end up with 2 meter radios?

As for McVey, well just a few observations. Concealed carry at the airport is not illegal. Also, I've heard that if you drive a long distance with a pistol holstered you may or may not forget that it's there and that you removed your overshirt or jacket for comfort when you stop and step out of your car hours later *whistles*

Also, there have been at least two other incidents I know of where people have been arrested and later it turns out all the initial details were almost all wrong.

    For example: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/north_bay&id=7276282

Turns out he wasn't even in the area at the time, had legal strobes as an Engineering contractor, had a radio because he was a ham (aka "police scanner" in the news article), handcuffs were fuzzy play cuffs, etc. Looks like a woman just set him up and made her story fit what he had in his car.

So, I'll wait and see what happens, although it doesn't look good going by the past history of this guy.

You forgot a master spy and at least one murderer.

As amateur radio is morphed into an auxiliary link service for LE, it takes on the perception of "one of the LEO tools in the tool kit." Quite simply, just like other cop gear. And, the slick salesmen from ARRL are rolling out the red carpet to get LEOs licensed. After all, more magazine subscriptions and book sales. Maybe some more for-fee courses, just for cops.

Live in a "scanner-prohibited" state as a whacker and wanna beat the scanner rap? Simple, get that ham license.

The distribution of random criminals in amateur radio is probably no different than the general population. A poor analogy. You could have done better. BTW, Florida seems to have as of late a lot of child-related crimes. Is it the sun, or the water? Maybe the palmettos.

Here is a link. The Indy PD links are in the footnotes. The "indy channel" is a short video clip.

    Bad Luck!!!!

Well maybe the handy was to monitor the AM aircraft frequencies. But the Handgun on his side was a big no no. I dont see anything illegal with what he did just Poor Judgement.

I'm far from a whacker supporter, but...
this little quote bothers me - it's from the Airport Police Chief:

Taken individually, none of things McVey did was against the law, including carrying the gun,
Airport Police Chief Jeff Augram said.
It was the combination of McVey's behavior and the things he had that drew the charge, Augram said.

    source:
    http://www.coshoctontribune.com/article/20100428/NEWS01/4280306/McVey-released-from-police-custody

"none of things McVey did was against the law"

How could this possibly be a legal arrest then??
Are not arrests based on the violation of a law?
The chief says no laws were broken - Yet McVey was charged.
You can't throw people in jail for not breaking a law.
You also can't throw people in jail for what you think they might do.
A lot of people might do a lot of things, including you and I.
This chief could stand a refresher course on the US Constitution.
I smell a dismissal and maybe a civil rights lawsuit,
with the chief as McVey's star witness.

I wonder if he was talking on his radio or just listening to a scanner when he came out of the car. Several reports said he had earpiece in his ear and talking to someone on his radio when he came out of the car.

Strange to end up in NC from Ohio to talk to the president at the airport.

Seems like good kid making some questionable decisions that have gone really wrong. Anyone with teenagers or early 20's kids can understand this!
