I THINK what you are saying is that government money wasted on scientific programs should be spent instead on social government programs.

Well, I am elderly, and so far I can feed myself (fingers crossed)....and my donations (which I keep low key) assist in some of the very social programs you allude to.

BTW, part of my work, personally, is 'improving the roads'.

Not clear how this is 'nonsense', or how the $ would have been better spent, but feel free to enlighten me.

Here's a different way to look at that because it appears you may be biting the hand that feeds you. The folks you're knocking and the offshoots from the NASA programs produce some of the sources of federal income that provide the social services that you mentioned. Even in your neck of the woods, a facility such as the federally funded Community Health Center of Rutland would not exist if it weren't for them and other high producers like them that directly and indirectly generate the tax revenues to pay for these things. This is actually how the economics of scientific research works and it clearly produces substantial additional net benefits to our society.
Of course, the Luddites among us might disagree.
