Well, i am not a scientific type, certain things about science do capture my attention. This is just down right sad, and stupid, they cannot fund 6.4 million annually on such a worthwhile project but the can pay that stupid Mueller and his clandestine clan over 6 million a month based on fake assed documents and weaponizing the US Justice Department to feed socialist growth within our government................WTF when are we all going to get tired of this shit and take our government back.......My senators here in oklahoma are worthless bitches, i am sure your are good ones, may they can fix this crap.

re : "Well, there are substitutes - multiple GPS receivers that compare against each other "

This does not measure changes in the HF path for those of us who like to research such things (as I did write: "NO SUBSTITUTE for the ability to run "tests" or perform research of this nature "). IF you watched the video, the keen eye would note that the 5 cycles observed moved from left and right a smidgen, indicating changes in the effective path length ...

I assume you also familiar with the old saying that goes: "A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure." but I digress at this point. (YOU probably did not see my previous posts about checking on the plant (manufacturing plant; we were building radios, including final test and ref osc tweak) GPSDO and assuring the plant manager that "all was well." No need to issue a work stop order and recall RADIOS already shipped if we can assure our GPSDO is, and has been, "good all along".)

Apparently NIST and others are researching/discussing ways to ensure redundancy of time sources beyond just GPS to address Smart Grid concerns...
From the "High Level Findings" section...

Findings from the workshop cover desired future characteristics and targets for time distribution alternatives; challenges and barriers to adoption of time distribution alternatives; and priority R&D areas for time distribution alternatives. Note that when ‘source’ is referenced it refers to the clock at the beginning of the distribution system, while the GPS system is the distribution system. Potential alternative technologies to GPS and GPS backup systems were also discussed. Exhibit E-1 provides a high-level summary of the results in all categories.

Alternative Technologies. Information was presented on the capabilities of Enhanced WWVB, eLoran, Wide Area Precision Time Protocols (PTP) and various GPS backups and enhancements. All have some potential for supplementing GPS, filling gaps, or providing redundancy in the future.

Future Characteristics. Minimal infrastructure, diverse time distribution systems, interoperability, and spoof/jamming/failure resistant, redundancy, precision and resiliency were identified as desirable traits.

Future Targets. Affordability ($500 range for users), greater accuracy (less than 10 μs to 100 μs for distribution), quantified error/performance (1 μs accuracy), no discontinuities, high uptime and integrity (99.99 %), and long time between failures (10 000 years) were identified as primary targets.

Challenges and Barriers. Existing and future solutions face a number of technical challenges. These include the lack of standards for performance and communication and a use case-driven architecture; inadequate capabilities to detect failures/attacks and awareness of the impacts of failures; infrastructure issues such as the development of timing networks, wireless propagation delays, and optimization of data/timing for convergence; breaking the existing dependency on space-based timing systems; and optimizing combinations of timing systems (e.g., wired, wireless, clocks).

Priority Research Areas. As shown in Exhibit E-1, the research priorities address the major challenges identified. R&D efforts needed range from development of standards, use cases and architecture to development of timing networks and other infrastructure. Test beds and demonstrations were identified throughout as necessary for new technology and infrastructure development as well as understanding system needs to help inform standards and architecture.

Many of us defend WWV and WWVB as secondary backup for primary time systems, perhaps GPS or NTP. It seems our concerns are validated by industry.

I've signed the petition to request that funding be maintained, and I encourage you to do the same.

About time this service is out of date.its good we can save some budget money on out of dated things ...it serves no purpose to what it was ment for originaly....

I won't sign it - this is a totally bloated and wasteful government program... let's kill it and come up with a better, more modern, and cheaper redesign that will lead us into the 22nd century, not out of the 19th century.......

we put men on the moon 50 years ago, surely we can come up with some better solutions rather than status quo....

    ham radio...status quo...yawn...

If the plug gets pulled on WWV, down here in Florida we have a back up. I can easily hear it even on my AM car radio. Take a listen for a minute,

Sad day indeed when the most convenient source for accurate time via radio is an authoritarian non-democracy. Along with a dose of their version of news if you're fluent.

However, gotta love that supplementary "R-R" ID in genuine Morse code !!!

Here is the story of the alleged "#1 station in Cuba."

We have. It's called The Internet. So, why are we still using RADIO? Does Not Compute ...

Neither does CB, GMRS or Ham Radio (in large part) for that matter. All could be eliminated, do you not agree?

I believe that I sounded argumentative and that is not my intent. I also signed the petition.

However, I do believe that there is room for improvement and/or augmenting what WWV/B have done for us over the years.

This guy offers a program that reads the usb GPS/GLONASS rcvr. And, this app runs on Android phones will also Blutooth link with that program on the PC to sync the time if you don't have one of those rvcrs. Of course, your phone has to be able to see GPS satellites and be within range of your PC. For me, I have to go outside or nearly so with my phone to sync with GPS sats if the computer getting sync-ed is on the 1st floor (3 story house). I do not know if there is an equivalent app for iPhone.

I do have Lady Heather (hope I don't banned) to see what if any additional syncing can be accomplished with it once the PC clock is set. I don't think much, but I have not tried very hard.

This is a source for the ublox rcvr. It appears to be in the US. I did not buy mine there. I went the more reliable:rolleyes: route and bought from a place in Shenzen CH via ebay. What is a couple of months delivery time?

Necessity is the mother of invention. It would be great if the features of both programs were combined + cell phone apps for Android & Apple devices.

The Wal-Mart based, shrink-wrapped, bubble-packed brigades are out though, and are rendering opinions of a decidedly different flavor, for they SEE NOT the technical efforts made "behind the scenes" in industry, verily, in the world. I also think they are incapable of reading any prior posts in this thread on the issue, but, that is only _my_ opinion ...

Check out this article in EE Times released today...

    https://www.eetimes.com/document.as...ampaign=link&utm_medium=EETimesDaily-20180822

It specifically highlights the shutting down of WWV, et al.

Thanks for this link. How embarrassing for EETimes to be yet another "reposter" of news carrying the same erroneous conclusion...

"WWVB, also from Colorado, does not appear to be affected. The station's reference signal is used by consumer devices such as clocks."

A simple reading of the NIST budget proposals leaves no doubt whatsoever WWV, WWVH AND WWVB will be shut down if this goes through as written. It's obvious they've not vetted any sources.

This incorrect information spreading like a virus with no one vetting before publishing may become as legendary as "SlimJIM has gain over a dipole" myth.
