Are you certain you'd know if your XP machine was compromised? Do you run security software on the XP that has been updated in the past several years? XP stopped getting security updates on April 8, 2014. If you don't connect it to any network, then you're probably ok. Otherwise, there's a good chance that XP machine is compromised through a zero day exploit.
Most of the Security Updates were for the NSA. I did not feel the need for them. I just use a Firewall and watch were I go.
I still have a WORKING Commodore 64. Finding a NTSC tv to use as a monitor when the old one gave out was a problem. Still have a Kantronics RTTY plug in cartridge.
I always wondered when this would finally happen with a piece of amateur radio software. I think more than anything it's been a lack of an adversary who cares enough to go poking for flaws in common radio software that operates over the air.
This is nothing new. Many users download Firmware updates from none secure web sites, Just to get a bigger number. Some make bricks.
