Radio Amateurs to Receive Awards From Radio Club of America

The Radio Club of America has announced its 2024 awardees. Among these are two well-known hams in our technical circles:

Dr. Nathan “Chip” Cohen, W1YW, the Dr. Arno Penzias Award for Contributions to Basic Research in the Radio Sciences. Established in 2023, this award recognizes significant contributions to basic research involving RF and related subjects to inspire future generations of scientific professionals. Chip pioneered fractal antennas, invisibility cloaks, and fractal metasurfaces including the science behind them.

Professor James Breakall, WA3FET, the Dr. Ulrich Rohde Award for Innovation in Applied Radio Science and Engineering. Established in 2023, this award recognizes significant contributions to innovation in applied radio science and engineering in the wireless industry to inspire future generations of wireless professionals. Jim is a pioneer in NEC and electromagnetic computer simulations and created the OWA Yagi antenna, among others.

The awards will be presented at RCA’s banquet on Nov 23.

Grateful for the recognition and kind wishes on Zed.

My work on fractal antennas, and so on, is not merely historical. It is ongoing and most is about 20 years ahead of foreign efforts, as best as I can tell from public info. It is disturbing how the original sources are not referenced by others and thus I get written off. Kind of like being dead while you are alive;-)

Well, I am not dead yet!

Amateur radio is an important garden for seeding innovation. Both Jim and I recognize that and will continue to encourage it.

Hello All, I want to thank you all for the big congratulations. I am very honored to receive the Ulrich Rohde (N1UL) award since I have admired the work of Ulrich for many years. I also treasure our long friendship. This award should actually be shared with many of my colleagues and friends over all the years. I could never do what I have done without all of them. Also, it is my huge pleasure to be listed here with my close friend and colleague, Chip Cohen, W1YW, who deserves this so much too. It is absolutely amazing if you look into all the collected work and patents that Chip has done over the years. Thanks again to all my friends and fellow Hams on here.
