Icom did a greaty job on it. It's a nice looking rig. I like the spectrum display, but I think I'll keep my FT857 until they work the bugs out of it. Then it ought to be a great rig. Any idea on the price they're looking for it?

Here are the main characteristics as announced:

The rig will be equipped with IF-DSP, which will control Twin PBT and Noise Reduction (NR) features, an inheritance from more sophisticated models (IC-756ProIII, IC-7400 etc.) The IC-7000 will not require or accept optional filters.

    Approx. 35W UHF power output.

A 5 cm TFT colour screen

Very high frequency stability (0.5 ppm).

    508 memory channels.

    Multi-function scanning.

    Built-in voice recorder and clock

Completely updated control-panel design, approaching that of "base" stations.

    Free-rotating or detented tuning control.

Case 20 mm shorter than IC-706.

    Generously-sized, backlit keys.

    10-key hand microphone supplied.

    Detachable control head.

Some much-more-expensive rig is going to "replace" the '706?

The editor of the French mag that "broke" this story politely refuses to cite his source for this statement.

The '706 is an incredibly popular unit - and is still selling well. (Even after dealers were "forced" to raise prices 03/01/05.) Two Icom officials (who I *will* name to anyone who privately asks me) advise that there is no "cease production date" set for the '706.

Some have cited the recent price increase on the '706 from Icom as "proof" that the '706 is being discontinued. Like the IC-703, I guess...OOOPS, sorry - the '703 price was dramatically DECREASED as it was discontinued. Maybe they are thinking of the '7500 receiver...OOOPS, sorry, that unit, too, is being discontinued without ANY price raising.

Does this "7000" unit exist? I'll believe it when I see it in the Japanese trade magazines...and it's not there now.
