World Amateur Radio Day set for April 18

    The Administrative Council of the International Amateur Radio Union has selected the theme "Providing Disaster Communications: Amateur Radio in the 21st Century" for World Amateur Radio Day, April 18, 2001. IARU has been the watchdog and spokesman for the world Amateur Radio community since its founding in Paris, France, in 1925.


    ARRL co-founder Hiram Percy Maxim, 1AW, was its first president.



    In a related item, the short-wave program Amateur Radio Mirror International will air a special broadcast for World Amateur Radio Day.


    Amateur Radio Mirror International is weekly program about Amateur Radio, short-wave listening and electronics produced and presented by the South African Radio League--the national society of Amateur Radio in South Africa. The program airs Sundays at 0800 UTC on 9750 and 21,560 kHz and is rebroadcast on Mondays at 1800 UTC on 3215 kHz. The special World Amateur Radio Day program will be broadcast at the following times: 1400-1455 UTC to India/Pakistan Frequency on 21,725 kHz; 1800-1855 UTC to Southern Africa on 3215 kHz; 1905-1955 UTC to Central and North Africa on 17,590 kHz; 2005-2055 UTC to Europe on 15,475 kHz; 0200-0255 UTC on 19 April to North America on 9585 kHz.
