Three storm chasers were killed Tuesday after their cars collided at an intersection during severe West Texas storms. Two of the three were identified as Randy Yarnall and Kelley Williamson , not sure if either were hams. Tornadoes had been reported nearby at the time of the crash and heavy rain had been reported in the area, according to the National Weather Service. According to the Texas Highway Patrol, one vehicle apparently ran a stop sign at the intersection near the town of Spur, about 55 miles southeast of Lubbock and collided with a black Jeep that was traveling westbound. All three occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. Now, I have personally been involved in storm chasing. Needless to say this is a dangerous sport!! Situational awareness is of the upmost importance, and as many storm areas are very rural, You are obligated to abide by the traffic laws. Don't speed, don't disregard traffic signals! Visibility can be dramatically reduced so one recommendation, when the weather is bad and you are chasing install and use a flashing amber or blue light (Check with your local laws) In Texas, Amber and Blue are used by safety vehicles (NO RED). Again, be aware of your surroundings! It's easy to take your eyes off the road with computers, GPS, Radio equipment, cell phones, cameras and more to distract you have at least one buddy with you.
