The cycle 24 sunspot group that I mentioned on November 18, 2009 has been numbered 11033 by the NOAA/SWPC. It is located near N17E20 and contains a beta magnetic signature capable of producing very small B class solar flares. As mentioned yesterday SIDC Belgium assigned it Catania #28.

The old solar cycle 24 sunspot group #11029 has produced new sunspots and has been re-numbered 11033 by NOAA/SWPC. SIDC Belgium has given the sunspot group Catania 30. It is located near N21E47 and contains a beta magnetic signature capable of producing very small B class solar flares.

The NOAA/SWPC sunspot number is 29 (the second highest so far for solar cycle 24) and the SIDC Belgium sunspot number is 30. The solar flux index
    (SFI) is 77.4.

The new sunspot groups could push the SFI above 80 in coming days. This would raise the maximum usable frequency (MUF) of the F layer high enough to improve propagation conditions on 20, 17 and 15 meters.

Solar cycle 24 continues to ramp up this month!

15 Meters is open in the afternoon folks!!!

I am posting this message here in the hopes that people will realize that 15 Meters is open most afternoons and it need not be a contest weekend to work the band! I get frustrated in calling CQ for 10 mins or so for someone to come back to me and tell me that haven't worked 15 in goodness knows when.

So please don't just tune the band, hear nothing an assume its dead! 15 should be a great band in comimg months, and from here in Florida I hear New Mexico to VE7 land to Hawaii often at 5/9 or better. I hope to work you on 15 soon!

I talked to 5w0kh in Samoa today on 17 meters usb, using a 80 meter loop and 100 watts at 1800 utc today from Fl.
Clearly the conditions have improved. So get on the higher bands people and lets make some contacts!!

    Brad -

Thanks for the note. I will have to tune in to the high bands. I have been running 40 and 80 recently. I have done a little 20m too, but nothing higher. If conditions are good on 15 I will have to make some noise over there.

    10mts

In the cqww what a fantastic weekend, on 28mhz had contacts chile, USA, Canada, most of south america, cuba, and yesterday 19-11-09 contacts into USA, Canada, Bermuda, South America all on 28mhz with my meter on the ts 2000 banging into 9+20 and my station giving the same report!! Great conditions here on 10mts guys but some days very quite, but it is getting so much better. Listen on 28470.0 where I'm on most days when i get in from work, see you on the bands.

    Sun Spots ramping Up!

:cool:I worked Chris TL0A in Central Africa at 1650, Juan EA8YB in the Canary Is at 1700, both on 17. On a side note worked 9G5TT the DXpedition in Ghana on 20 at 2100. All this using 100 watts with a Kenwood TS-570D/G and a Mosley TA-33 classic up 42'. I too have noticed that 17 and 15 meters have been open a bit in the afternoon, from my location here on the Treasure Cost of Fl. Will be glad to see the bands come more alive in thr ensuing months ahead.

Oh yeah, 15m has been open around 9am on the west coast. I've been working all over Africa, Asia and the pacific on 15m for a while now.

    "Patience is a Virtue"

Dream on people... It's going to be a while until we see cycle 24 in full swing. We will start seeing some minor improvements by April 2010, but the peak of the cycle is predicted to happen by Oct 2013. So don't expect some great HF conditions, especially the upper bands until well into 2012. In the mean time clean up your shack, do some antenna work and find some other stuff to do. :)

Why should I do other stuff when there is DX to be worked right now on 15m? Actually, I've been working DX on 15m for a while now. Now when the peak gets here the conditions will obviously be better, but you're head is on crooked if you think there is no DX to work on 15m.

    Exactly.
I must've worked at least a couple of dozen Stateside stations on 15m, some VK's on 12m and one FR on 10m....and that's only for today.
Had I not moved to the higher bands I could probably have spent the entire day working into N America.

I've been spending a lot of time on 2m lately doing HSMS and trying other digital modes and doing stuff other than DXing. The following is the result of casual operating for the last few weeks, just 15m, using a mixture of CW, SSB and RTTY, from San Francisco.

    ZB2FK, 5N/LZ1QK, ZS2DL, BX5AA, KH0/JR2DOL, TI2AIM, KP2HC, 7X4AN, PT7CB, 9J2BO, TL0A, EA8CN, XR0Y, VP2MUM, 9G5TT, TR8CA, EA8URL. And that's just from 2009-10-29. I just so happened to have got the last few confirmed via LoTW for my 15m DXCC endorsement last month.

I also worked 5 all time new DXCC entities since the beginning of this month and confirmed via LoTW; TR8CA, YO9FNP, FP/KV1J, IM0/IK0FMB, ZC4VJ. I even worked VQ9LA in Chagos via long path on 20m with a 2 element yagi and I am waiting for that card to arrive for another all time new one confirmed.

There is nothing to wait for, the DX is there now.
