    Well,

Is this the end of this discussion gentlemen?

It would appear to me that a case has been made for some form of bandwidth segmatiantion, but there still remains the open issue of how much bandwidth should be allocated for ARQ type operations.

Another point that has been made here is that the developers of WinLink do need to be congradulated for developing such a system. It would appear that this is a significant advance in amateur radio technique.

Another issue seems to be that this group feels that the projected growth of their system justifies the allocation of significant bandwidth for digital communications. On the other hand, no one has made any attempt to determine the real amount of bandwidth that should be allocated or what affect this system will have on analog communications techniques.

Where do we go from here? Should we just wait until the League generates a proposal and then debate it? It would appear that this would generate a lot of heat for the League and those that have an axe to grind with it. I think it's time to get a program going to get a reasonable proposal on the table and get it to the FCC.

We basically agree that the current system needs changing.. and we likely have to wait until the ARRL proposal is finished before resuming the debate.. It is my hope that the ARRL proposal will remove the FCC from the micromanagement of the bands and leave it up to us to work it out among ourselves like we do on VHF/UHF...

WHAT "monied class", Ken?? You paid far-far more for your car than I did for my sailboat. We're not all in 75 foot yachts. Careful with that broad brush, my friend.

Since when was the USA a "Socialist Country" that you start complaining about other people's success in life?

I'm sorry if you feel that I have used to broad of a brush. You may be right in this assessment. Should this be the case please accept my apologies. It has been mentioned on here several times that some of the yahting crowd is using WinLink systems to get e-mail remotely and that they are engaged in the tsunami aide. In fact, many of those amateurs that frequent the resorts of the Indian Ocean rim are wealthy or are successful people. Many are great people, I hope that I have no offended anyone.

Here in Ma/RI, I have heard similar statements made by this group. Many are contemplating WinLink for their boats for the same propose. While this is great, does this mean that every other amateur activity must move asside?

Again, please accept my apology for using the broad brush technique to stir the pot. I would appear that we have concluded this topic and it's time to stop the juvenile stuff and begin the real work of getting a reasonable proposal on the table and getting it enacted.

    Howard,

The USA is not a Socialist country. That was not my implication. I have no problem with successful people except for the fact that their success tends to breed a certain amount of arogance towards the general public.

I have always maintained a minimal station for my pleasure. I have been chided mulitple times by monied class people that have indicated that guys such as myself should not be granted licenses because we tend to create too much competition for them when rare DX appears on the air.

I would like to apologize for attempting to stir the pot a bit. I was trying to extend the good elements of this debate and my choice of words was not really good.

    Howard,

You must agree that there is far more spectrum available on the bands above 28 Mhz. The real problem is how to allocate the limited spectrum below this frequency so all users are treated fairly and have a reasonable opportunity to enjoy their operating time with severe mutual interference.

Thank you for all of your comments, though I'm not always in agreement. I have learned a great deal and I hope others have as well.

I guess I have a lot of faith in Hams being gentlemen about their use of frequencies... except in contests, when it is the law of the jungle... I rarely find that QRM is a problem especially with digital QSO modes such as PSK or MFSK...

Let see what the ARRL proposes

I wish I could say the same. I was in Death Valley National Park this weekend and when I tried to send several greetings to some family members via pactor, several PSK stations appeared to deliberatly jam my signal. Although I listened on what appeared to be a free HF channel for a full five minutes before transmitting, these stations suddenly appeared to transmit for no apparent reason. The text QSO's are available for the appropriate authorities if they request these transcripts in the future. Death Valley is a park that has claimed the lives of many and I take HF communications seriously.
