Sam "WA5VDM" Nelson on December 20, 2015, "WA5VDM Key" went silent.

Samuel Joseph Nelson, 71, owner and General Manager of Kay Communications for almost 40 years, retired in 2011 and lost his battle with cancer Dec 20, 2015, surrounded by his family in his home.

Sam was a United States Navy veteran who served his country in Vietnam. He was quick to say it was an honor to be able to serve his country. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the USS Orleck in Lake Charles and volunteered much of his time to help with the preservation of the ship. His biggest dream was to see the ship moved to a more prominent location and be restored to its former glory.

Sam had a passion for ham radios, a "hobby" that he and his father enjoyed since Sam's childhood. His call sign was WA5VDM and is now a silent key.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 23 years, Maggie Nelson; daughter, Delia Nelson of Sulphur ; two stepsons, Jeremy and Cody Harris of Sulphur; three grandchildren; and sister, JoAnn Froberg of Alvin, Texas.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and "Toni" Nelson; sister, Patsy Wheeler; and two nieces.

Honoring Sam's wishes, the family will not have any services.

Cremation was entrusted to Johnson & Robison Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made the USS Orleck at www.orleck.org.

Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.johnsonrobisonfh.net.
