You are mistaken. CW is decoded in your head. Then the call and contest exchange entered into the electronic log which is N1MM logging software. N1MM does send exchanges when you click on it or press a function key, a contest report is sent. Be it a serial number, or whatever the particular contest calls for. ALL contesters have a paddle to send manually to stations they don't get the call on the first time in a pile up or to ask for a repeat because of QRM. That is True. I built the station at WW1WW, but K0DQ set the record operating it, wich held for the last 10 years or so. I have nowhere near the skill or endurance needed for that level of operating.
