The 10th Annual RT 66 on the Air special event starts on September 12, and
runs through September 20, 2009. This year there will be 19 stations all along
RT 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. including a rover running mobile on the "Mother Road". Each station will have one special 2x2 call starting with W6A and running through W6W.
This has been one of the most successful Special Events to date and the
idea was concieved by the Northern Arizona DX Association, located in Flagstaff, Az., back in 1999 when the dozen club members were discussing ways to get more radio-active.
One member said, why not try to put RT 66 on the air. After all, there seemed to be a lot of interest in the Mother Road, not only in the USA, but worldwide and it runs through Flagstaff! Another member said, why not try to get stations all along RT 66 involved. Jerry Conover, NE7I, spearheaded the
event. To start the event, we decided to try and get stations in each of the 12 cities/towns mentioned in the song " Get you kicks on Route 66" by Bobby Troupe. That involverd a lot of club searching but we did it and we were off and running. After two very successful years, and an enormous amount of work and effort handling those 13,000 contacts, QSLs, & certificates, our small NADXA club decided it was just too large of an event for us to handle so we asked for help from some of the clubs involved. Our friend at the Citrus Belt Amateur Radio Club came to our rescue and took over hosting the event! They have done a great job of handling the event since then, as it is well organized and has continued to grow. Jeff Richardson, W6JJR, at the CBARC now heads up the event and we applalude him for his great work. You can visit their website by Googleing RT 66 on the Air or CBARC for more information about this special event. We hope you all join us and try for a clean sweep by working the 19 2x2 calls for this special event! Look for us
around 33(cw) or 66(ssb) on the dial on most of the bands
73, and hope to CU in the log!
