Gary VE1 RGB It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to one of the good guys. Gary Bartlett of Wellington, N.S., passed away in hospital on Saturday, July 22, 2017, after a three-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 73. Born in St. Stephen, N.B., to Charles Victor and Phyllis C. (Young) Bartlett, Gary attended elementary school in Bayside, N.B. and graduated from high school in St. Andrews, N.B. Gary attended the University of New Brunswick under the Air Force Regular Officer Training Program (ROTP) and graduated in 1967 with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. Later in life, he also earned a certificate in Business Administration from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Gary received his training as a Radio Officer in Winnipeg and in 1968 was posted to 405 Squadron in Greenwood, N.S., spending his flying career on his beloved Argus aircraft. Gary went on to postings in Summerside, P.E.I., and finally to Maritime Headquarters in Halifax. He left the Air Force in 1974 and joined IMP Aerospace, where he worked for more than 40 years before retiring as a Vice-President. It was during his university years that Gary met the girl next door - the love of his life and best friend, Beverley (Baskwill). Bev and Gary married in Fredericton in 1966 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Although gruff on the outside, Gary had a huge heart. He especially loved his two children, Andrea (Scott) Bishop, and Andrew, his grandchildren Caitlin, Sydney, Allie, Anna and Ross, and his two great-grandchildren, Trinity and Leina. He was looking forward to meeting his two great-grandsons, who will be born this fall. Gary is pre-deceased by his father Charles. He leaves behind his mother Phyllis, and sister Judy Bartlett, along with many more friends and family, including his mother-in-law Irene (Gillespie) Baskwill, brother-in-law Stephen (Jane) Baskwill, nieces and nephews Geoffrey (Patricia), Amanda, Nick (Gillian), and Mandy. He was especially close with his brother-in-law and camping buddy, Rick Stewart, his wife Debbie (Baskwill), and their children, Jennifer (Colin), Jason (Megan) and Richard (Shauna). Gary was as smart and funny as he was kind, and was never afraid to speak his mind. A voracious reader, he was rarely without his Kindle. He spent many hours reclined in his favourite leather chair. When he wasn't reading, he enjoyed the long walk to the Fall River Tim Horton's for his morning coffee. He loved his sweets, especially a good ice cream bar. At the age of 12, Gary discovered amateur radio and was immediately hooked. He spent countless hours in the basement of his home, tapping at the Morse Code key. A member of HARC, radio contesting was his passion and he won many awards and recognition from his fellow ham radio enthusiasts. Some of Gary's fondest memories are from his summers in Meat Cove, Cape Breton, hiking and camping with Rick and Myles Boutilier, or The Three Amigos, as they came to be known. Gary's love of the outdoors and his strong sense of community led him to volunteer regularly with his local Citizens on Patrol program and the Waverley Ground Search and Rescue. The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Killeen, Dr. S. Shivakumar and Dr. I. Beauprie, as well as the nurses of the Med-Day Unit and Unit 8.2 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, for their competent and caring treatment. Special thanks to Julie, Trish, and all our friends at the Nova Scotia Multiple Myeloma Support Group. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. A celebration of Gary's life will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, at the same location.
