Richard "Dick" Farkas, 87, of South Bend, IN, peacefully passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living in South Bend, IN with his family by his side. Dick was born on July 22, 1936 to the late Alex and Julia (Nagy) Farkas in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Dick graduated in 1954 from Riley High School in South Bend, and was active with his former classmates attending their reunions from year to year. He served for two years in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1965. On August 7, 1971, he married Shirley A. Ellis in Plymouth, IN. Dick is survived by his loving wife of over 52 years, Shirley A. Farkas of South Bend, IN; his daughter, Kelly Farkas of Durham, NC; and a sister, Beverly Weist of South Bend, IN. Dick spent the majority of his professional career with 1st Source Bank where he served as a Computer Programmer at the Operations Center. He retired in 2001 after 23 years of dedicated service. Dick's free time was spent over the years in several different hobbies. Early on he was an avid photographer and eventually passed on that love to his daughter. He spent several years operating a Ham radio and enjoyed connecting with people all over the world, sometimes even communicating in Morris code. Dick was also involved in R.C. car racing, however his biggest love was flying his R.C. airplanes with the Tri-Valley R.C. Flying Club. He spent many years as an active club member and really enjoyed the time outside and comradery with the other members. Dick was a big Notre Dame football fan and introduced his daughter to that love when she was 8 years old. They spent the next 10+ years going to the stadium on game day to soak in the sights and sounds and on occasion (when tickets were available) take in a game. After his daughter went to college at Purdue University, that school allegiance became split for him. Outside of his many hobbies, Dick's first love was spending time with his wife and daughter. Taking a family vacation every year was Dick's priority and they spent that time well, driving down to Walt Disney World and spending time along the Florida coastline. Dick was a loving husband and father and always put family first. The family wants to express gratitude to the caregivers who compassionately and skillfully assisted with Dick's care in the last four months of his life. Among that group are Ashley, Sarah and the team from Elara Caring and staff at Brookdale Senior Living in South Bend. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2024 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. There will be no funeral services.
