Monday, April 8, 2024, will bring a total solar eclipse across much of North America. This celestial event will be followed widely by hams because of the sudden and dynamic changes that occur in the ionosphere during an eclipse. While much is known about ionospheric propagation, much is still to be learned. This will be the last total solar eclipse in North America for nearly 20 years. The Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation is encouraging amateurs to get on the air and operate as part of the The HamSCI Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science. Propagation experiments will include the Solar Eclipse QSO Party using CW, FT4/8, SSB and other digital modes and The Gladstone Signal Spotting Challenge (GSSC) using CW, WSPR and FST4W modes. The April 8th event will run from 1400-2400 UTC and amateurs may operate on any band and any mode from 6-160 meters (except the WARC bands.) The partial eclipse begins ~1710 UTC in Texas and ends ~2040 UTC in Maine) Participants are encouraged to operate before, during and after the eclipse passes over the continental US. Doing so will create baseline data (pre- and post-eclipse), and eclipse influenced data (during annularity or totality) for the research team. All the details may be found at www.hamsci.org/eclipse. If you have any questions or know of a club that would be interested in having a presentation to learn more about the science around the events, please contact the HamSCI Public Relations Officer, Ed Efchak WX2R at pressrelations@hamsci.org. Save the date…get on the air…and send in a log.
roc-ham radio network will be doing a special event APRIL 8th TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE W2E WE WILL BE DOING IT ON VOIP AND ON HF DURING THIS EVENT for more info go to roc-ham.net website
Great point! Even running your station remotely--while you view the eclipse-- is a great way to generate data
Should explain what will happen. Intresting when the ceiling will fly away again for a short while. https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2018GL077324
Always interesting to see the effects (or potential effects) an eclipse has on hf radio condx. Here are links & pics to two Solar Eclipse 20m WSPR Tests that I performed- Solar Eclipse 2017: https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/eclipse-wspr-on-14mhz-sfo-bay-area.579265/ Solar Eclipse: Oct.2023: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wO_fWja1PoY5voQcnyzu4vdxQZrPDQK6?usp=sharing Might try it agn this April. 73, n6spp-cm98
Please keep in mind that most of the affected areas of the eclipse will be running emergency communications on 40 and 80 meters. , K9VM , RACES OFFICER IN BROWN COUNTY INDIANA. Thanks for your cooperation for allowing us to provide for our community's!
W2E Solar Eclipse April 8th 2024 operating special event. Here in Genesee County NY we are directly in the path and will see total totality! The excitement is building. folks from all over the US will be traveling to get a glimpse of something that most of us really will never see again. So with all the anticipation not only here in Rochester, NY., but really all over the US. This will be a great opportunity to do some research and enjoy the hobby.....propagation will be interesting......NASA will be very interested in signal reports from all over the US. It is an important time for us as a radio operator, our data collection will be directly impacting contacts all over the US and see how during this once in a lifetime event it affects radio signals. So I am very honored to feel as though we will be contributing to science and technology. This event is sponsored by the ROC-HAM RADIO network, here in Rochester, NY. We have secured the special event callsign W2E, there is 9 other stations for this eclipse special event. See ROC-HAM.NET We will be YouTube live April 8th 2024 https://www.youtube.com/live/3Cq2iIXqb_4?si=Ts_VoWgyli_SKXjI for the Solar Eclipse operating W2E special event call here in Genesee County NY we are directly in the path and will see total totality. A big thanks to The ROC-HAM Radio Network our neighbors east of us in Rochester, New York for allowing us to operate here from Genesee County sharing their special event call https://www.roc-ham.net/solar-eclipse... We not only plan to stream live but have a camera outside so you can watch the Eclipse over our shack.
