    Jim Monk passed away on September 30, 2011. He was a ham with a history of service and dedication. He served in US Army and was an active Ham for over 60 years. He had a nice Collins collection and kept a well stocked parts supply. He will be missed by his many Ham friends and the community of Norfolk, NE. May the DX continue to reward his accomplishments in heaven forever.

    Funeral services for James L. Monk, 82, of Norfolk will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 6, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Norfolk. Reverend Dr. James Brewer will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Home for Funerals, Norfolk, Nebraska.

    Jim died Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Norfolk Veterans Home.

    Jim was born June 2, 1929 to Leslie and Gladys (Deles Dernier) Monk, in Lincoln, NE. Jim graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. On October 19, 1948 Jim began his career with NPPD. Jim served 3 years in the Army from December 19, 1950 to December 18, 1953, with 18 months of it in Korea. On June 2, 1951 Jim and Carol Fought were married at Fort Devens, MS. After Jim’s discharge from the Army they returned to Lincoln, Nebraska and Jim continued his career with NPPD. In 1965 Jim was transferred to Norfolk as Line Superintendent. Jim retired in 1994 as Northern Regional Manager, after 47 years of service to NPPD.

    Jim became a Ham Radio Operator at age 17 and spent 60 years with electronics and electricity, building many of his own electronics and radios.

    Jim was a member of the Administration Board of First United Methodist Church, Past President of the Norfolk Rotary Club, Chairman of the Norfolk Library Foundation, Chairman of the Action Council Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Management Council, Past Director of United Fund, a member of Elkhorn Valley Amateur Radio Club, Secretary treasure of Northeast Shrine Club and Oriental Band, Madison County Civil Defense Communications, the Elkhorn Valley Vagabonds Camping Club, Past President of the Norfolk YMCA. Jim also served on the Norfolk Planning Commission for 10 years, the Madison County Planning Commission and the Board of Directors of the Lutheran community Hospital.

    Jim is survived by his wife Carol, his children James and Jeanne Monk of Norfolk, Stephen and Laurie Monk of Chandler, AZ, Pamela and Matt Hamilton of Round Rock, TX, Timothy and Elisabeth of France, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a brother Richard Monk of Ogden, Utah.

    Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
