    William A. Beers, 91, of Bedford, died March 27, 2012 at St. Teresa Healthcare Center in Manchester after a period of declining health.

    He was born in Hartford, Conn., on Jan. 25, 1921, to Augustus and Mary (Wells) Beers. He grew up in Holyoke, Mass. and lived in Wilmington, Mass. before moving to Bedford many years ago.

    During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre.

    He earned bachelor's degrees in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts in 1943 and in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnical Institute in 1948.

    Mr. Beers worked as an electrical engineer and manager with New England Telephone Co. from 1948 to 1981. In retirement, as a member of the Telephone Pioneers, he volunteered with the Talking Book Repair Program.

    He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including fly fishing. He also enjoyed wood turning, music and photography. He was an amateur radio operator and was active with Nashua Amateur Radio Club and Amoskeag Radio Club.

    He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church.

    The family includes his wife of 63 years, Martha L. (Parry) Beers of Bedford; three daughters, Susan M. Beers of Groton, Mass., Barbara A. Beers and her partner, Chris Friedman, of Hopkinton and Teresa Apgar and her husband, Scott, of Bedford and four grandchildren, Emily Griffith, Caroline Apgar, Eric Apgar and Tyler Apgar.

    He was predeceased by a grandson, Nathan Griffith and by a brother, Gilbert Beers.

    The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at St. Teresa Healthcare Center for the loving care they provided to William.

    services: There are no calling hours.

    A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Road, Bedford. A reception will follow immediately in the church hall. Private burial will be in Bedford Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Teresa Healthcare Center, 519 Bridge St., Manchester 03104.
