It is with deep regret that I report the passing of Tom McDuffie, KM6K. He slipped away peacefully yesterday after a massive cardio-vascular event while driving to work.

Tom was known to thousands as the manager of the Ham Radio Outlet store in San Diego for nearly 30 years. He was a true icon within the San Diego amateur radio community, and was legendary in his fair, generous dealings with everyone he encountered in that role. He was also a patient mentor to those who needed assistance in de-mystifying the functionality of the new devices that one had just purchased.

Tom was also a source of great humor, who's eyes twinkled a bit when he got you to laugh. He also had the ability to enable a newcomer to amateur radio to find the treasure in their new-found avocation, and could renew a sense of exploration into new technologies to those who had been in the hobby for a lifetime.

Tom will be greatly, greatly missed. It is unthinkable that his infectious smile will no longer grace the HRO "club station" on Kearny Mesa.

So many more things could and should be said about Tom. I hope that you will record your stories and remembrances here for all to share.
