Bart Cleo Anderson, K7EDU, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2009 of heart failure while sleeping at his home in St. George, Utah. Bart was born March 8, 1943, in Burley, Idaho.

Contracting polio at the young age of three did not dissuade Bart from earning his Eagle Scout Award, joining the Navy Coast Guard and becoming one of Southern Utah's most prominent hiking experts. His countless awards and accomplishments earned him the title "Ranger Bart" and he has also been called "one of Dixie's greatest natural resources."

Bart's adventurous youth was filled with escapades of flying, hang-gliding, skydiving, hiking the Grand Canyon and sailing the Great Salt Lake. His adventures continued throughout his life, and his influence in the hiking community has led to a trail being named in his honor at Sun River, south of St. George. Bart received his ham license at age 13, and maintained it all his life, as an active and charter member of the Dixie Amateur Radio Club. His friendly voice was frequently heard on the club's Sunday Night net.

Bart's love for the people of St. George was unsurpassed, as you would hear on his answering machine: "Please, please be kind to each other."

He is survived by his best friend and wife Delorice; stepmother Eiko; former wife Marsha Kaniakas; sons Todd (Sandy), Tony, and Tyler (Shannon); daughter Tara (Rick) Andersen; brother Paul (Barbara); sisters Kristine (Ken) Willson, Karla (Richard) Phelps, and Kathy (Robert) Clark; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way.

For more about Ranger Bart see Bart Anderson: Forever Nature's Priest.

The net control operator last Sunday night called Bart's call one final time, followed by 30 seconds of silence. 73, our good friend. May all the DX come your way.
