    Thomas Arthur Varin
    August 19, 1943 ~ February 11, 2018 (age 74)
    Thomas Arthur Varin, of Fountain Valley passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Hoag Hospital from complications arising after an extended illness. He was seventy-four years old. Tom was born August 19, 1943 in Providence, Rhode Island, and lived in Fountain Valley for forty-two years. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and worked as an Electrical Engineer with numerous companies before retiring. He was instrumental in creating two holographic covers for National Geographic magazine, the holographic plates commemorating the Centennial Restoration of the Statue of Liberty in 1986 and was part of the team that created the distinctive “Dove in Flight” hologram still in use by Visa International.

    Tom was active in the Boy Scouts of America and Sea Scouts, as an adult advisor and was the father of two Eagle Scouts and Able Rank Sea Scouts. He was awarded the Bronze Pelican from the Catholic Committee on Scouting, the Award of Merit from Pacifica District, Vigil Honors from the Amimi Chapter of the Wiatava Lodge of the Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver for distinguished service to the youth of the Orange County Council. He was an active Parishioner at St. Wilfrid of York church in Huntington Beach as a Eucharistic Minister among other roles. Tom was also an active amateur radio enthusiast and he belonged to a number of different ham radio operator clubs including the Western Intertie Network, the Two Meter Area Spectrum Management Association (TASMA), the Insomniac Net and the Condor Connection Net.

    Tom is survived by Virginia “Ginger” Varin, his wife of fifty years and his two sons, Paul and Jason. He also leaves behind his mother, Maria L. Varin, and sister, Donna Finch, both of Hope Valley, Rhode Island.
