    Rudolph W. "Rudy" Kalns, 84, of Uxbridge died Monday morning, April 9, 2012 in the Milford Regional Medical Center. He was the husband of Lee F. (Esau) Kalns.
    Mr. Kalns was employed for several Massachusetts area companies. He pioneered early development of fax equipment, temperature control devices, optical fire detection, suppression equipment and designed optical smoke detectors. Products were for consumer, commercial, aircraft and military applications. Many devices were for life safety and protection.
    He was born Jan. 3, 1928 in Weymouth, son of the late Rudolph W. and Daisy M. (Kleinberg) Kalns. He was a graduate of Braintree High School, Braintree, Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University, both in Boston. He had been a resident of Pembroke for 38 years before moving to Uxbridge in 2002.
    Mr. Mrs. Kalns observed their 47th wedding anniversary on Nov. 29, 2011.
    Rudy enjoyed family and friends, boating, fishing, bowling, amateur (Ham) radio and loved his grandchildren.
    In addition to his wife Lee, he is survived by two sons, Mark Stephen Mattioli and his girlfriend Nancie Marshall of Riverside, RI and Andrew Thomas Kalns of Manchester, NH; two daughters, Lisa Marie Kalns Martin and her husband Keith Dana Martin of Westborough, MA and Linda Anne Kalns of Hudson, NH; 5 grandchildren, Alayna Marie Canas and her husband Luis of Elmsford, NY, Laura Anne Kalns and Alison Leigh Kalns both of Manchester, NH, Kevin Dana Martin and Rachel Leah Martin both of Westborough, MA and many nieces and nephews.
    A Celebration of Life with Eucharist will be held Fri. April 13, 2012 at 11AM in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 17 Congress St., Milford, 01757.
    Burial will be at a later date in the Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
    Visiting hours will be held Thurs. April 12, 2012 from 4-7 PM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 101 N. Main St. (Rte. 122), Uxbridge, MA 01569.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 17 Congress St., Milford, MA 01757 or Dana Farber Cancer Center, Milford Regional Medical Center, c/o Dev. Office, 14 Prospect St., Milford, MA 01757.
