Does anyone have info as to the nature of this event? Who? What? how?

Maybe you are thinking of the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend event which is held on the 3rd full weekend in August. It has been in existence for over 10 years now and it is a world wide event with over 40 countries involved.

The event you mention may well be an 11 meter event.

There was another similar event in existence, but some controversy over which was the official event. I'm local to Ayr, so you can guess my allegiance.
