The Britannic was the third and largest sister ship to the RMS Olympic, and RMS Titanic. Unlike the Titanic, her bulkheads had been extended in height, to prevent the same fate of her sister in 1912, along with lifeboats for more passengers than she could carry. Before the Britannic could sail her Maiden Voyage as a trans-Atlantic Liner, she was requisitioned for use as a hospital ship in World War One, where she transported the wounded from the battlefields back home. On November 21, 1916, the Britannic struck a water mine placed by a German U-Boat, which crippled her hull, ultimately leading to her sinking in the Aegean Sea less than a year after being placed in service. Of the 1125 souls on board, only 30 were lost in the sinking.

Join Nathan, KC9HYY in remembering the 99th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the HMHS Britannic as KC9HYY/WSL3 (White Star Line #3) from November 20th 0000Z to November 25th 2359Z. Operations will be on 80-10 meters SSB and PSK31. For more information including a schedule of the event, please visit: www.kc9hyy.wordpress.com
