    ROTTERDAM Herbert "Happy Herb" F. Kohl, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Glendale Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
    Herb was the beloved husband of 63 years to Hilda F. (Ricciardi) Kohl; she passed away on January 20, 2009. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his three daughters, Linda Kohl Mastroianni and son-in-law James of Clifton Park, Rebecca Kohl of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and Janice Kohl-Sarapin and her companion Kenneth Rosen of Bradley Beach, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Faulkner and his fiancee Tricia Pascucci, Gregory Falkner and his wife Sera, Lila Sarapin-Horn and her husband Bryan, Paula Sarapin Albanese and her husband Matthew, Joel Sarapin and his wife Diane, Perry Kohl-Drucker, Henry Kohl-Drucker and Sammie Kohl-Drucker; his great- grandchildren, Ella, Hudson, Marcella, Lucia, and Aubrey; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Ricciardi and his wife Margaret of Naples, Fla.; as well as his much loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Frieda (Hanson) Kohl; and his brothers, Wallace, Alvin, Arnold and Leonard Kohl.
    Herb graduated from New Auburn High School in New Auburn, Wisc. and took courses at RPI. He served our country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps "Semper Fi" during World War II in the Pacific Campaign stationed on the Islands of Samoa and Tarawa. He attained the rank of staff sergeant in charge of operation of the radar encampments on those islands.
    At WGY-WRGB he was a radio technician until he retired at the age of 65. He was an active ham radio operator (K2ELR) for more than 70 years and was currently studying for advance ham radio operator.
    He was an active secretary for the GE Retiree Group until his passing and an active member of the Rotterdam VFW Post. Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow calling hours in Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery in Rotterdam. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
