A co-worker of mine suggested this to me years ago to prevent oxidation/corrosion that occurs on the battery terminals.
Glue a copper penny on top of the battery somewhere in the path between the positive and negative terminals. Use an older solid copper penny versus a newer aluminum copper clad penny, it will last longer. What happens, the penny acts as a sacrificial anode and the penny will corrode instead of the battery terminals corroding.
I have done this and not have had to clean the terminal for several years now.
Occasionally the yellowish oxidation crud will need to be brushed off the penny, or the penny will need to be replaced when badly corroded.
