Let's use an inexpensive Yaesu 2980 (or Handheld) amateur radio, Raspberry Pi, and APRS to send an email to friends and family via the International Space Station and Winlink email servers. Sure, this is a "hold my beer" moment, but it also allows us to send email from almost anywhere in the world with equipment you already own with a simple technician license. This is practical peace of mind if you spend any time in the back country, away from anything and everyone. No "special" radio equipment or directional antennas are required to talk to satellites. Use the ham radio in your truck, or even your aprs-enabled handheld transceiver.
