In the scheme of innovation, less than three years from inception to recognition is lightning speed. Those who think we are stuck in the past just don't know ham radio today. §97.1 Basis and purpose. The rules and regulations in this part are designed to provide an amateur radio service having a fundamental purpose as expressed in the following principles: (a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications. Note addition to your quote. Joe won Ham of the Year in...2015?2016? The nominator was well aware of this. Joe won this time as part of the team of THREE that came up with FT8 I doubt Joe would have been interested in another award per se: he wanted to stress it was the TEAM that did FT8, IMO.
