Amateur Radio Kids Day: Sunday 8 January

On the IARU Region 1 site Lisa PA2LS writes about the Amateur Radio Kids' Day event that takes place this Sunday.

Kids Day is an on-air event to encourage young people (licensed or not) to have fun with Amateur Radio.

The Kids Day operating event is not a contest. It’s a way to tell young people worldwide about the magic and mystery of two-way hobby radio communications.

To do this, Amateur radio stations are being asked to devote this short time window to promote the terrestrial hobby and ham radio satellite operations to youngsters. This, by providing a place to make contacts with other Kids Day stations around the world.

It is designed to give on-the-air experience to youngsters and hopefully foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older hams a chance to share their station and love for Amateur Radio with their children

For more information on Kids Day, see the IARU R1 website

It always gripes me during a visit to the ARRL website for direct guidance on the rules, or regs. on this or other happenings. They are careful not to specifically reference regs., or offer such help. Some guidance on what to do, or avoid "on the air" during this occasion would be welcome.

In the U.S., good luck finding much clarification between the SCO (control operator) and VPOD protocol regulations surrounding this type of event from stations in this country. U.S. stations operating on Kid's Day are not GOTA stations, and it's not Field Day...

    Anyone?

An invitation for Region 1 stations to tune 10 meters for international contacts with AM stations. The allure of normal sounding audio, and the information from a nice strong carrier may help keep kids' attention.

Conditions from Europe to North America, a hotbed of AM activity, have recently been best between 1400 and 1900 GMT.

Pse look for 10 yr. old Charles, (A.k.a 'CJ') WA2CJC and 14 yr. old Samantha, W2SSC on 10 & 40 CW! Btw, CJ's DOB is 01/08/01 so he'll actually be 11 on Sunday - hihi. Sam's very first contact was on Kid's Day in 2005 with W8UI, CW mode. (Now sadly a SK.) Charles' very first contact was also CW with HC2SL on 04/15/11 as KC2ZWV! Sam says that when she upgrades her ticket, she wants to change her call to WA2UI in honor of Dave - bless her heart. GL to all. As always, take care es...
