903MHz Homebrew question

kb3gjt writes "Being a relatively new ham (~4 months), and not having another couple hundred dollars for a 10m front end, I pose this question: has anybody successfully built a 903MHz stand-alone transmitter or receiver for SSB? I know that transverters are more common for anything above 70cm, but I'd like to try my hand at homebrewing a stand-alone unit. My only problem is the lack of any kind of schematic on the web or in any book that I've read for such a beast. Does anybody have any resources they can share?
