It seems everyday a new node is coming online. What IRLP does is link repeaters via the internet, you need a computer, and high speed internet connection, hardware and software (Linux). The hardware and software come with the package. The amazing thing about this is you don't need a computer yourself to use this just an HT. You can however have your own personal version of it and do it on simplex so a repeater isn't even needed. I don't think this is going to hinder anyone from upgrading to a higher class license or playing around HF. It's just a new toy that has been added to the world of Amateur Radio. Some info on a new node in EI....

The first IRLP node in EI came on air on Monday the
21st of June last. It was set up by the South Eastern
Amateur Radio Group and operates on a trial basis from
the QTH of John EI8JA in Waterford city. The node is
linked to the Waterford 70cm repeater (EI7MLR) on Mount Leinster, Co. Carlow. Like all IRLP nodes it has a
unique four-digit code which is used to access it using
DTMF tomes. The node numberis 5883.
