Get Started with FT8 - An Introduction for Beginners

FT8 is a mode in the WSJT-X software developed by Dr Joe Taylor K1JT. In this video I show how to get started and make contacts with FT8, introduction for new beginners and even a pro tip how I know from a quick glance if the bands are open.

GridTraker is an excellent, powerful, addition to WSJT.

 

My only issue with FT8 is its really just a contesting platform. If you want QSO's you need another mode like JS8 call. I think if your reaching out to new Hams you should be implicit in that. I can see new hams going through it all and saying is that all there is? That's exactly what I thought using FT8.

 

i really not a big fan of ft8 but i must say these last few years it would have been very boring for me. new qth very restrictive as long as antennas is concern. ft8 been there for me, still will prefer cw, ssb. but i'm thankful for what ever i could get in this location. with better solar conditions it will even out the playing field a bit.

 

People hate FT8? Why in the world so? I love it. It uses virtually no bandwidth, doesnt splatter all over the bands, and you can rack up a lot of contqcts around the world fast. I can make 10x the contacts via QRP than I ever could over ssb voice. And the digital portions are so far away from the voice portions how could anyone hate the mode?
