Just to be clear; Rode, Neumann, Schoeps, Royer, and AEA all manufacture their own elements. They are not imported from elsewhere.

I just bought my first (Royer)R10 a while back, based on a recommendation by WA3FET. After I attached the pre-pre-amp they sell, it really blew me away.

Of course, all ribbon mikes are rather delicate and thus their drawback. BTW did you know that W1XYZ had a line of ribbon mikes that he sold out to ,,,hmmm... may be audio-technica? Crowley Mikes; you will recognize the name if not the callsign.

I ordered his handbook and having a good gander at the parametric eq. Only thing about it I don't like is needing an amplified speaker. Don't know why it needs to be a requirement to spend another $200 on one. It stopped me from ordering one.

 

It didn't stop others.

The speaker/eq system is designed to work together. Works great.

 

Never paid more than $20 for a mic. Never had a single complaint.

Fascinating and a real pleasure to hear this early history.

On the Theatre Organ front my son is one of the 'new generation' of theatre organists (see https://organistencores.co.uk/tag/alex-jones and https://www.atos.org/alex-jones-named-winner-ytoc). He'll be back in the US later this year teaching and studying for his DMA at Houston and hoping to put in some ATOS appearances again soon

I've used iCM mics only on every Icom I've ever owned. I've used HM-12 mics only on every Kenwood I've ever owned. I have always gotten very good audio reports on SSB and AM.

I love Bob's mics and will always use them. But hey that's just me.

And Bob - I DO own a pair of K-Horns. You're right about their being an experience. Purchased these new in 1984 and they still sound amazing! Nothing better IMO.
