    Such a shame!

The structure was quite a marvel and its signal a welcome beacon on the lower bands for stations of lesser antenna capabilities (like mine ;-)!

Very glad no one was injured.

It is a good thing that was well out in a Field somewhere. Cuz, at a weight of 80 THOUSAND POUNDS, that would go through about any building as if it were made of WARM BUTTER!

Wish there were Pix of the smashup. Wonder if there is ANYTHING at all that is salvageable.

The storm Oskari has brought the world-famous 100-meter-high 160-m-/80-m-Hauptantenne Radio Arcala (OH8X) after 5 years to collapse. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. The other six antenna towers have survived the storm unscathed, even buildings were not taken. In the reports published on Wednesday DX MB.The storm brought gusts of up to 125 km / h which not only demolished the 40-ton array, but also caused power outages of more than 200,000 households in Finland.
Nevertheless, the operation to proceed in OH8X: Radio Arcala also promises this year a "QSO with Santa" on the stations OF9X to 20 m and OH9SCL (Santa Claus Land). Beckons again a Santa Claus-certificate that can be issued in the name of children or grandchildren for the work of the two stations. How did it come to this idea, you know, in a report by Martti Laine, OH2BH, in the upcoming issue of CQ DL.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

The storm Oskari has brought world-renowned 100m high 160-m-/80-m-main antenna of radio Arcala (OH8X) after 5 years to the collapse. Fortunately, nobody was injured. Six other radio masts have got over the storm regardless of, also buildings were not downed. About that reports DX mb appearing on the next Wednesday.

The storm had gusts up to 125 km/h which downed not only the more than 40 metric tons Array, but also provided to stream failures of more than 200,000 house holds in Finland.

The company should still go on with OH8X: Radio Arcala also promises this year again a " QSO with the Santa Claus “ about the stations OF9X on 20 ms and OH9SCL (Santa Claus Land). For the work of both stations waves again a Santa Claus-Zertifikat which can be also issued on the name of the children or grandchildren. How it came to this idea, get to know in a report from Martti Laine, OH2BH, in the coming issue of the DLS CQ.

Meanwhile, don't miss the "before crash" photos, especially the 160-80m tower and stack. Quite an accomplishment for "amateurs". Glad to read the other structures survived.

    Euro windstorm

Technically not tropical, but a so called European Windstorm.

They name them also but its according to a different convention then our tropical storms and hurricanes.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_windstorm

They can reach similar wind strength and destructiveness.

It is really a wonder, that when a ham-radio antenna collapses (or particially collapses - i don´t know real facts) a weight of 40tons is coming to ground... 40tons "antenna"... Glad that no humans were insured! But it´s really sad that this wonderful antenna is gone for the moment.

But i really hope that they redo the antenna!!

After breakdown is before rebuiding - let´s go!!!!!

They say if an antenna doesn't come down it wasn't big enough. I guess this one was big enough.
