    Gary N. Atteberry, of Hersey, Michigan, passed away Friday, August 10, 2012, at his home after a short illness with A.L.S. He was 72 years old. Gary served with the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years, including 13 months in Vietnam. He attended the U.S. Navy School of Music and was a member of the Marine Corps Band. After his service in the Marines, he and Carmen moved to Hersey. He was a member of the Michigan National Guard for 12 years and attended Ferris State University. Gary served on the Reed City Police Department for five years, two of those as chief, the Ferris State University Department of Public Safety for 29 years, retiring as Captain and assistant director, and after his retirement served part time with the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety for seven years. He was an Amateur Radio operator (WB8WIA) and member of the Big Rapids Area Amateur Radio Club, worked with Osceola County Emergency Management, and Hersey Fire Department.
    Gary enjoyed hiking, biking, camping, traveling, target shooting, and being with his family.
