It is with great sorrow I advise that my friend Rana, WB4NFO, became a Silent Key on December 29. He passed quietly at age 75 at his home in Alexandria, VA after a short illness.

Rana was a wonderful friend of ham radio, known all over the world for his active DX work and his cheerful voice at the mic. He always had a wonderfully strong signal, especially on 20-meters where he ran a bit of power and a 4-element 204BA @ 65' in his back yard. We used to chat trans-Atlantic often when I was posted in Morocco in the late 70's (CN8CW), and he came to visit us there.

He became a ham as a young man in Nepal, mentored by Father Marshall Moran, 9N1MM in Kathmandu. He was very active in the Southeast Asia Net (SEANET) and traveled several times to their conventions in Bangkok and elsewhere.

Rana will be missed by all who knew him, but he'll be remembered as the always cheerful and helpful voice on the radio.

I knew Rana for many years ever since he was a student in 70 years. Very often worked with him when he was in Nepal - I remember him as a friendly and responsive man.
Publish below the photo that he sent me at that time

On December 29, 2013, Pradyumna Rana died from congestive heart failure peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76 in the house where he had lived for 40 years. Beloved by his son (Pravin); wife (Rama); daughter-in-law (Himashree); three granddaughters (Nisha, Neha, Megha); his brothers (Ravindra and Dipendra); his sister (Shuvalaxmi); and extended family and friends in Nepal, US and all over the world.

He was born in 1938 and one of the first students at St. Xaviers School in the 1950s. He began working at the American Embassy in the 1950s and worked in many parts of Nepal and India. He immigrated to the United States in 1965 and pursued technical studies in electronics - an early and enduring passion that lasted as long as he lived. He had developed a keen interest in amateur radio in Nepal and obtained his operating license in the United States which opened up the world for him - making friends in the United States and in many countries. He retired from AT&T in 1990 after having worked nearly 30 years as a telecommunication specialist. He loved everything technical - preferring to fix his own heating system; car; putting up a substantial antennae for his Ham Radio; and anything around the house he could get his hands on.

But his real gift was the capacity to love others - always ready with a helping hand. A lover of food, he enjoyed entertaining others with good food, drinks, laughter, and conversation. This gave him tremendous joy. He made friends easily and there were many; in all age groups; and across many different backgrounds. He was reciprocated with love and company from this large network of friends.

He loved his family and and his granddaughters even more. They gave him so much joy and company and his youngest (Megha) says she saw him in his dream eating fried chicken in her "dream's background" and would send her a pizza on her 11th birthday.

We loved him very much and will miss him as long as we are alive.
