Anything coming from Mt. Saint Helens this time of year is almost certainly steam not smoke... You can tell the difference by watching to see how quickly the cloud dissipates. Steam immediately, smoke, not so much... What you were seeing there Bill is more likely to be steam. We tend to forget that the "lava dome" in the crater is still warm even though the actual eruption was many years ago...
