Published on Oct 6, 2016 Tim Duffy, K3LR, interviews Jeff Steinman, N5TJ, during his visit to DX Engineering in Tallmadge, Ohio on September 28, 2016. Jeff has been an amateur radio operator since 1978, and is a three-time Gold Medal Radiosport (WRTC) Team Winner! Jeff has won several single and multi-operations contests in both CW and SSB, and holds world records in both SSB & CW in the CQ-WW Contests. During the 1999 CQ-WW-SSB contest he made 10,253 QSO's in 48 hours while contesting as an un-assisted Single Operator from EA8BH in the Canary Islands. Jeff also smashed the CQ-WW EU SSB records from CR2X in the Azores.
A very enjoyable interview and great to hear someone speak from the heart about the hobby. I just finished the book Contact Sport and to get 4 medals is incredible, having read what is involved. Jeff you should consider writing a book about your experiences, I would enjoy reading it, as many other would I expect. You could become our pseudo Elmer. Good luck with it. Steve
Great interview. In every field there are a few people who push through to the top, but unlike some who do that Jeff really sounds like a down to earth person. His records are amazing.
Take him off EA8 and put him in Kansas and count his totals. Location means more than skill in the current contest scoring rules. Go to one hop in or to EU and watch things pop. If every USA state were a country counting, watch one hop scores jump up. USA based contests were made up by a NorthEast cabal of operators who made the rules for themselves, surprise. de Mr. One Hop
He won from CU. That's Europe... You know how difficult it is to win from Europe? Jeff is one of the best contesters of all time. That's for sure.
One Hop, if you watched the interview you'd see that Jeff won from WM5G in Garland TX. Jeff is truly one of the all time best contest operators.
Very much enjoyed this interview. Jeff is an A+ person, with amazing skills. Nice job by Tim as well. Jim N3BB
Thanks to both Jeff and Tim for sharing this discussion. Interesting and inspiring! Note to HS0ZCW: Yes "location matters", but only the best ops can take advantage of it. Three successive WRTC wins trumps the location argument.
