This annual amateur radio event held on the 3rd full weekend in August has once again brought amateur radio operators, lighthouses and the public together again to promote International goodwill , lighthouses and amateur radio. This year’s event, held on 15-16th August, saw an all time record number of 442 participants from 50 countries transmit from a lighthouse somewhere near their place of residence.

The ILLW is in its 13th year having commenced its existence in Scotland in 1995 as the Northern Lighthouses Award for ham radio operators. In 1997 it became an international affair and has grown each and every year since. This year saw a 10% increase in submitted entry forms which can be viewed on the web site http://illw.net . Alaska was a first this year with an entry for Sentinel Island. Germany listed 55 lighthouses, Australia 49, USA 47, and England 43. Malaysia celebrated their Lighthouse Weekend with 9 lighthouses taking part. The Azores, Balearic Islands, Egypt, Slovenia, Panama were some of the smaller countries represented with one entry from each.

All in all a very successful event. Looking forward to 2010.

    International Lighthouse weekend

The Ocean Monmouth Amateur Radio Club was again happy to operate from the Sandy Hook Lighthouse( US0035 ) this year. All club members that worked to set up, operate, and tear down did a fantastic job. All through the HF bands were not good we were able to work a few Lighthouses and many 6 meter and 2 meter contats were made. We are on the calendar for next year, and hope to hear and work you all. 73's de: Jeff N2LXM O.M.A.R.C. Event Coodinator.
