Bethpage, New York - On Sunday, January 11, 2009, the doors of Briarcliffe College will open for the tenth annual Ham Radio University and the ARRL New York City/Long Island Section Convention. Ham Radio University 2009 is a day focused on various aspects of Amateur Radio with over 25 forums, an operating radio station, club room, handouts and much more!

The event is being held at Briarcliffe College, a private university located at 1055 Stewart Avenue on Long Island in New York (approx. 30 miles east of New York City). There will be forums about everything from satellite communications, weather, wireless history, low power operating using radios as small as a tuna tin and the latest in emergency communications. There will also be a VE (volunteer exam) session for those who would like to take an FCC exam and Special Event Station W2V set up and operational where you can listen and talk to other hams all over the world. The focus will be "hands on" with many demonstrations and activities. The keynote speaker is ARRL First Vice President Kay Craigie N3KN. A special National Weather Service Skywarn spotter training session for beginners will be held in the morning with an advanced course to be held in the afternoon. You do not have to be a ham radio operator to be a Skywarn spotter. Contact Walter KA2RGI@arrl.net to pre-register for the Skywarn classes.

HRU 2009 is sponsored this year by the Radio Central Amateur Radio Club and is a cooperative effort between over twenty clubs and organizations in the New York City- Long Island area. Besides the forums, there will be tables set up with information about different organizations and clubs including the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Weather Service, Friends of Long Island Wireless, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as well as ham radio classes, local FCC exam schedules, public service and other activities. There will be information on Emergency Communications, antennas, Digital Communications and more.

Check the website for forum schedule and directions. www.HamRadioUniversity.org

Look for the green signs that say "Briarcliffe College". There is free parking available (please use the back entrance) and the college is handicap accessible. Food and drink will be available in the cafeteria. The event is rain or shine. Donation at the door is $2. There will be door prizes and other giveaways. TALK-IN on W2VL 146.850 -600 136.5 PL
