This flight takes us from Tacoma Narrows Airport (KTIW) in Gig Harbor, Washington over Mount Olympus in the Olympic National Park landing at Quillayute Airport (KUIL) in Forks, Washington. The Olympic Mountains are referred to as the “Alps of Washington”, and for good reason as seen from the 4K GoPro camera mounted under the left wing of the airplane from 10,500 feet. Ham radio contacts were made throughout the flight on the 2-meter FM National call frequency of 146.520 MHz. Radio equipment in the airplane included an Icom-2300 radio running 25 watts into a belly-mounted 1/4 wave whip antenna and an Icom HM-209 noise canceling microphone. Receive audio was run directly into the airplane intercom auxiliary jack into a Lightspeed Zulu Three noise cancelling headset. Camera equipment included two GoPro Hero 5 cameras, one mounted under the left wing recording in 4K and the other in the cabin recording in 2.7K. All audio was recorded directly into the cabin GoPro camera from the intercom phone jack.
Folks - if you're anywhere near the Puget Sound, you really owe it to yourself to monitor 146.52 (no tones, obviously) for Bill W7NY and his air-mobile ops! The altitudes he flies are such that distances he can cover are pretty amazing. He's a GREAT radio operator, and makes great videos to document his air travels I have him in my log and have heard him on many times... it's always a treat! For those who AREN'T around the Puget Sound, his videos really bring it to life what it's like to fly a small private plane and make contacts in the air. Stay safe Bill - "keep the blue side up" and keep these amazing videos coming Dave W7UUU [Dave talking here - not any sort of "QRZ endorsement" or such]
