    Carl E. Smith

    Leicester - Carl Ernest Smith, 77, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017, at the Charles George VA Medical Center.

    Born in St. Joseph, MO, he was a son of the late Thomas A.T. and Freida Kuchenmeister Smith, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Miriam W. Smith, brothers, Thomas A.T. Smith, Jr. and Richard Smith and sisters, Freida Livingston and Mary Gandy.

    He received his Associates Degree in Business Administration/Marketing from AB Tech and was always active in communication services and ham radio operation. He was formerly associated with Communications Services, Inc., and was active with the ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) Organization for many years. He was also the retired owner of DX Publishing Co.

    He was an Air Force veteran. He was the co-founder of the Radio Museum of Asheville (A-B Tech), and was a life member of both the ARRL and the QCWA.

    Surviving are his sons, Charles E. Smith and Rodney W. Smith (Michele); step-daughter, Angela E. Brown (Stephen); grandchildren, Austin, Reagan and Karen; and brother, Charles F. Smith.

    Funeral services and burial will be at 12:00 noon Thursday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen and the Rev. Donnie Walker officiating.

    Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Youth Ministry, 200 Mt. Carmel Road, Asheville, NC 28806, or to the Youth Ministry of Trinity Baptist Church, 216 Shelburne Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

    I'm very sorry to hear that. I interacted with Carl a bunch, a dozen years ago, and he was a goodhearted gentleman with a great sense of humor. 73, N4AA, and thanks for everything!
