Industry Canada - the Canadian equivalent of the FCC - has proposed to reduce that country's Morse code requirement to five words per minute for full HF operating privileges.

The Canadian national amateur radio society, RAC, or Radio Amateurs of Canada, sought the action last year. Industry Canada says it has received "a number of petitions" from those who contend there's no longer any justification for a 12 word per minute Morse requirement.

The proposal would give Canadian radio amateurs operating privileges similar to those currently accorded to US amateurs who successfully pass the five word per minute Morse test.
