Getting on AO-40 need not be expensive, according to Michael Mims, K4IZN, in Alabama. "I am making CW contacts with a modified Drake 2880 (no preamp) and a homebrew 12-turn helix," he reports. He says he was receiving AO-40's downlink at S1 to S4 during this week's transponder experiments. "My S band downlink investment is about $35," he said.

Contact him for more information at k4izn@arrl.net.
