    John E. Ericson Sr. died Thursday January 22, 2015 at home with his loving Family by his side.
    He was born in Savannah, Georgia on October 27, 1926, the son of the late John and Matilda Mettais Ericson.

    He attended Mont Pleasant High School and was hired as a Lineman for the New York Telephone Company. At the age of 17 John enlisted with the US Navy and served aboard the USS Polaris as an electricians mate in the North Atlantic during World War II. After his service he returned to work with the New York Telephone Company. He earned his associates degree in engineering and graduated from Hudson Valley Community College while working and supporting his wife and six children. While working for the NY Telephone Company John was part of a team that developed a doll for young hearing impaired children. John was one of the lead transmission engineers preparing telecommunication systems to support the 1981 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

    John retired from the New York Telephone Company (Verizon) as a Transmission Engineer with 42 years of dedicated service.

    John was the committee Chairmen for Boy Scout Troop 29 in Schenectady where two sons and a grandson earned the rank of Eagle Scout. John served as a volunteer Fireman at Hose #10 on Albany Street supporting the Woodlawn community in the City of Schenectady. As a master gardener, John devoted over 25 years to the Schenectady County Cooperative Extension serving the community by giving guidance at county fairs and over the phone. He and his wife Shirley took pride in their yearly vegetable garden. John was a member of the Schenectady Veterans of World War II, Rotterdam Elks #2157, Schenectady Liederkranz, Schenectady Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, New York Telephone Pioneers, Telephone Pioneers Older Timers, Telephone Pioneers Grumps Club, and the Schenectady Amateur Radio Association with his call sign W2BJS.
    John obtained his Master Ham Radio Operators license and recently obtained certification as an examiner. He enjoyed working on ham radio equipment and talking with other operators all around the world. John enjoyed attending annual swap meets with his friends in Rhinebeck, NY and Bennington, VT.

    After retiring, John attended classes and learned the art of small engine repair to start a small engine repair business and recently attended classes learning the art of MIG, TIG, and Arc welding. John enjoyed fixing small engines and equipment for family and friends.
    John was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectady. He served the parish by repairing the phone lines and was a leader of a counting team on Sundays for many years.
    John had the pleasure in 2013 of being selected by the Leatherstocking Honor Flight and visiting the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. and having both his sons accompany him.

    Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Shirley J. Ericson (Perry) of nearly 53 years and son, Edward John Ericson.
    John was devoted to his family of six children and seven grandchildren by always being there to support them. He is survived by his sons, John Ericson Jr. (Lisa) of Schenectady, Mark Ericson (Dede) of Greenville, SC; daughters, Suzanne Ericson, Kathleen Carroll (Kevin), and Theresa Bacchi (David), all from Schenectady; seven grandchildren, Krista and Kyle Carroll, Natalie and Zachary Ericson, Daniel and Paul Bacchi, Elisa Mae Ericson; several nieces; several cousins from Utica NY. The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses at Ellis Hospital and Schenectady-Amsterdam Hospice; his nurse, Jessica and Aide, Kim.

    Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 8:15am from Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00am at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2777 Albany St., Schenectady. Interment will be held in St. Josephs Cemetery, Schenectady. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 4 until 8pm at the funeral home.

Funeral services, Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at 8:15 a.m., from the Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m., at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2777 Albany St., Schenectady. Interment, St. Joseph's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
