New ROS modes for 500 kHz band

Two new modes designed for use on the 500 kHz (600m) band have been added to the free ROS Amateur Radio digital data modes software.

In the latest version when you click on "Menu Mode” there are two new ROS MF modes available called: ROS7 MF and ROS1 MF.

The two modes each occupy a bandwidth of just 100 Hz, ROS7 is designed for a "quick" contact whereas ROS1 is a low speed mode for very low power (QRP) working..

    Characteristics:

    ROS7 MF: 128 characters/minute BW: 100 Hz S/N (2500Hz): -26.7dB

    ROS1 MF: 21 characters/minute BW: 100 Hz S/N: (2500Hz): -35.7dB

Download the latest version of ROS from
    http://rosmodem.wordpress.com/

To use ROS you just need your radio, a PC and a sound card interface.

Information on sound card Interfacing can be found at

Yeah, I seem to remember that also. Then again, QRZ.COM is a worldwide internet site so ROS may be legal elsewhere.

Narrowband version of ROS still not legal below 222MHz without FCC approval

USA amateurs would be wise to remember and review this previous thread.

Is the software source code freely available? If it's secret source then I'd suggest just moving along.

It's not Open Source. He has all sorts of stuff hidden in there. One of the things is a list of callsigns that he doesn't want using it. I think W1AW is one of them.

After I looked through the de-compile, I just threw it away. It's written in VB6 which is about as obsolete as Windows 95.

Why do people keep producing these softwares which will just die a slow death.? Why do we need a 500 hz wide digital communication medium when PSK 31 will get you all over the world, with thousands of users.? Nobody ever has difficulty copying my transmissions and I use 25 watts. If its for use when the band is in poor propagation condition, find something useful to do until it gets better !

Totally agree with you, Mel. DM780 and Fldigi are stuffed with modes hardly anyone ever uses already. The trouble with hams is we like reinventing the wheel.

For the people who haven't seen this before, the modem was initially released as a Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum modem. I think the author thought it would add an air of sophistication to it. I don't think he realized that FHSS wasn't legal in America.

This is not FHSS however. The author renamed it after seeing his modem get disapproved by the FCC.

This is a serial tone modem. Fully legal when he documents it (which he hasn't yet). It uses a fixed number of tones, and the modem selects a tone per cycle. It looks like FHSS on a spectrum analyzer, but the bandwidth is too narrow to be considered SS.

At best, it would be an SS modem inside the normal SSB bandwidth. Forget that though, it is just audio, and not RF SS.

When he documents the protocol, it will be legal to use. That has not occurred yet.

    Huh??

Excuse me, but afaik when you feed an SSB transceiver with a bunch of audio tones what you get is a bunch of RF freqencies! :D

Has DSTAR been documented and released to the public yet?

True. I was merely saying that "a bunch of RF frequencies" does not make it SS.
