Russia launches new Amateur Radio satellite

A new satellite carrying Amateur Radio 'Yubileiny' (RS-30) was successfully launched from Plesetsk on 23rd May.

Radio Amateurs around the world reported receiving the CW beacon signals on 435.315 MHz with reports also of signals on 435.215 MHz

At the time of writing it is still not clear exactly which type of transponder, Linear or FM, is onboard the satellite. It appears to be in a 1500 km orbit which would give a pass time of up to 20 minutes and enable stations over 7000 km away to be worked.

Work on the satellite started in December 2004 with the intention of launching it in 2007 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first satellite Sputnik-1.

A full report on the satellite with pictures can be seen at

Yubileiny is a next generation small satellite http://www.npopm.com/?cid=242

The Russian Federal Space Agency launch announcement is at http://www.npopm.com/?cid=news&nid=60

Reports on Yubileiny (RS-30) continue to appear on the AMSAT Bulletin Board which you can join at http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/tools/maillist/maillist.php

A number of Radio Amateurs have posted recordings of the beacon on the web:

    Re: info

I guess I got more from the website than you did:

After checking the satellite systems, the data related to the first artificial satellite launch is downloaded. The transmission lasts for 4 minutes. Within this time the following data is downloaded: a call signal and TM-data (10 seconds); a voice message (1 minute); a pause (50 seconds the first artificial satellite imitated signals (10 seconds); an image (1 minute); a pause again (50 seconds).

The onboard spacecraft data is transmitted via a radio channel in the 435 MHz international frequency band of experimental and radioamateur communications, in cyclic mode, in narrow-band FSK mode.

Voice messages and images can be received in any place of the Earth when the satellite floats above within the radio visibility ranges. Any standard radio equipment can receive the signal in this frequency band requiring no additional technical means.

Yubileiny...... in good company, just one of the many.

Well, the makers website only confirms the presence of an uplink in the 2M band, and a downlink in the 70Cms band, but no mention was made of any transponder... or any means of interconnecting RX and TX.

If this turns out to be a downlink only bird, it'll be in good company. It would be only one of many satellites with downlinks in the amateur radio satellite segment(s) that are essentially useless junk to the vast majority of licensed radio amateurs. The IARU website is littered with planning applications for mainly University based 'me-too' satellites. If you don't like it.... complain to the relevant authorities in your country. A look at the IARU site will comfirm what I've been saying for years. Our satellite sub-bands have been hijacked, with the IARU's blessing.

    See..

Of course, if I'm wrong about Yubileiny (jubilee) AKA RS30, I'll be delighted.... but for now, I won't be holding my breath in hope.
