Since a lot of ham radio ops use USB to serial converters, It should be known that FTDI, makers of the popular FT232(R) USB to serial chip have released an update that will potentially brick any devices using a counterfeit FTDI chip. Users on the EEVblog forum noticed after a windows update was downloaded and installed that hardware using the counterfeit "FTDI" chip no longer worked.

The update causes the driver to change the PID of counterfeit chips to 0 causing the device to no longer be recognized by windows. At the moment it appears to effect users operating Windows Vista or newer.
