Taking place on the 56th anniversary of the surprise attack on the Navy ship USS Liberty on June 8, till June 9. Accepting hams looking to participate in other states to increase public awareness and will assign sub-calls such as N1U/4 etc. Currently have assigned N1U/3 to @AB3ZI in PA who will be doing some digital modes that day. I plan to do mostly SSB on the 80,40 and perhaps 60m band.
USS Liberty was a converted WW2 Victory ship. The Red Oak Victory ARC waves hello, have a successful event on the air.
Possibly you do not know this, but the USS Liberty was DELIBERATELY ATTACKED by the armed forces of Israel on June 8, 1967. It was patrolling in international waters, off the coast of Egypt. My condolences, Steve. Thank you for sharing that meme and photo. I first learned of the Liberty attack perhaps a decade or so ago (following my political "awakening" of late 2008/early 2009). I read Phil Tourney's Erasing the Liberty during a road trip in September 2019, and what a riveting account that is! Glad you tuned in. Yes its a 1959 Johnson Thunderbolt and it didnt hiccup at all, great piece of gear when working properly. Rough conditions on the rx side but I used that SDR to pull in many contacts. Was going to finish up on 80m tonight but I am about yabberd out, so I will call it concluded, and very successful. 3950.net will have recordings up for listening at some point.
1. No rescue effort was cancelled. Liberty was rescued by a destroyer and fleet tugboat. 2. Two F-4 fighters were recalled. 3. No evidence the Pres. did so with intentions of sinking the ship. 4. A more likely reasoning was to avoid escalating armed tensions with Israel/Egypt. 5. No evidence that Israeli command levels knew the ship was American. They believed it was Egyptian. The Israeli Navy had lost track of Liberty and wiped it from their plot in error. Conspiracy theories never die, but are just whacky. (Bill, USNR-ret) RIP all the lost sailors!

The Johnson Thunderbolt never flinched. I used a Kenwood TS-530S as the SSB driver with an MC50 desk mike. It locked up on me a couple of times, so maybe next time I can find another hand operated mike that would work in its place to eliminate that problem. Not bad for a start tho.
Yes, I think there were (5) AGTR class recon ships like the Liberty. Tom Adams who was N1U/4 doing the cw contribution was a crewman of AGTR2.
Getting ready for this years N1U....1x1 call secured. Looks like it will start Friday then end Saturday due to time constraints. Sat is reserved on 40m SSB (7245Kc) after the Navy net ends.
